preferential treatment for Rush Limbaugh

I read the following in News of the Weird by Chuck Shepherd

“Wheelchair-confined Richard Paey committed almost exactly the same violation of Florida prescription drug laws that radio personality Rush Limbaugh did, with a different result: Limbaugh’s sentence, in May, was addiction treatment, and Paey’s, in 2004, was 25 years in prison. Both illegally possessed large quantities of pain killers for personal use, which Paey defiantly argued was (and will be) necessary to relieve nearly constant pain from unsuccessful spinal surgeries after an auto accident, but which Limbaugh admitted was simply the result of addiction. (In fact, if Limbaugh complies with his plea bargain, his conviction will be erased.) Paey’s sentence now rests with a state court of appeals.”

But, it gets worse. Here’s a bit more of the story. Unable to find a physician in Florida (his new state of residence), his previous doctor wrote some undated prescriptions. Not exactly legal, but his patient was in severe pain and obviously Florida doctors were too scared of prosecution to do their job humanely. Well Pasco sheriffs deputies had started a secret pharmacy surveillance program that led to Paey being under surveillance for suspicion of drug trafficking. Three months later – no evidence of drug trafficking. So, they told his doctor Paey was dealing and he would get 25 years for writing the prescriptions. Extremely freaked the doctor lied to the officers giving them several different stories, but after telling the truth in court (which usually ends a jury trial) the jury was told they should convict regardless of the doctor’s testimony. The jury was told, “the prescriptions were illegal simply because they had been written or issued 6 weeks after Richard’s last medical exam. It was still drug trafficking.”
